Arrábida, Portugal: Complete Guide

Everything you need to know to visit Arrábida — where it is, how to get there, what to do, where to stay.

Arrábida is a limestone mountain range south of Lisbon, in Portugal, declared a Natural Park in 1976 to protect one of the last refuges of authentic Mediterranean vegetation in the Iberian Peninsula. It stretches across 17,000 hectares between Setúbal and Sesimbra, rising to 501 metres at its highest point and plunging directly into the Atlantic at beaches with turquoise waters.

Where is Arrábida

Arrábida is located in the Setúbal Peninsula, district of Setúbal, about 40 minutes south of Lisbon via A2/A12. The main gateways are Setúbal (east), Sesimbra (west) and Azeitão (north). The scenic N379-1 road crosses the heart of the park with unique views over the Atlantic.

How to get there

By car from Lisbon: 40-50 minutes via A2 to Setúbal or via A12. By train: direct Lisbon-Setúbal connection in 50 minutes, then bus or taxi. Lisbon airport is 35 km away — taxi, Uber or car rental are the most practical options. There is no public transport inside the park; a car is recommended.

What to see and do

Galapinhos, Galapos, Portinho and Figueirinha beaches (among Portugal's best); the 18th-century Arrábida Convent; dolphin watching in the Sado estuary; Moscatel wines in Azeitão (José Maria da Fonseca, Bacalhôa); hiking trails with altitude views; diving in the marine reserve; bird and endemic flora watching.

Where to stay in Arrábida

For an authentic experience, we recommend accommodation inside the park or at its gates. Quinta da Arrábida offers 4 private houses inside the Natural Park — Manor House, Wood Oven I & II, Pine Tree House — with private pools, gardens and zero contact between guests. Setúbal and Sesimbra have conventional hotels; Azeitão has charming country house hotels.

When to visit

May to October is the best time: mild weather (20-28°C), water warm enough for swimming. July and August are intense — crowded beaches and restricted access. September is the best month: perfect temperatures, warm sea, few tourists. Winter (Nov-Mar) is quiet, ideal for hiking and gastronomy.

Local tips

  • Book accommodation and wineries 2-3 weeks in advance in June-September.
  • In July and August, access to Portinho and Galapinhos is restricted — go early (before 9am) or use the mini-bus.
  • Leave no trash on beaches or trails — the park is a fragile ecological reserve.
  • Plan 2-3 days to combine beaches + wineries + dolphins without stress.
  • The local cuisine (fresh fish, fried cuttlefish, Azeitão DOP cheese) is as good as the landscape.
