Best Beaches near Lisbon

Galapinhos, Portinho, Comporta, Adraga — the most beautiful beaches less than 1h from Lisbon.

Lisbon is lucky to be half an hour away from some of Portugal's best beaches. North, the wild Atlantic coast of Sintra-Cascais. South, the limestone Arrábida with Caribbean-style turquoise waters. And further south, Comporta with pine forests and white sand. This guide organises them by style, distance and traveller profile.

Arrábida beaches (40 min south)

Galapinhos — elected Europe's best beach in 2017. Turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation. Access restricted in July-September. Galapos — next to Galapinhos, slightly larger and more accessible. Portinho da Arrábida — half-moon-shaped cove, with bar and restaurants. Figueirinha — the largest and most family-friendly in Arrábida, with concessions.

Sesimbra beaches (35 min)

Ribeira do Cavalo — hidden between cliffs, access via 30-min trail. Emerald water and zero infrastructure. Praia da Califórnia and Praia do Ouro in the centre of Sesimbra, sheltered, ideal for children. Lagoa de Albufeira — coastal lagoon with kitesurfing and ocean in front.

Sintra-Cascais coast (30 min north)

Praia da Adraga — dramatic cliffs, dark sand, strong swells. Praia da Ursa — one of the most beautiful but with dangerous access. Praia do Guincho — world-class surfing and kitesurfing, strong winds. Praia das Maçãs — classic, with promenade and cafés.

Comporta and Tróia (1h south)

Praia da Comporta — 60 km of continuous white sand, low density, chic beach restaurants. Tróia — sand peninsula between the Sado and the Atlantic, access by ferry from Setúbal. Praia do Pego — between Comporta and Carvalhal, perfect at sunset.

How to choose

For turquoise waters, calm sea and snorkelling: Arrábida (Galapinhos, Portinho). For surfing and wind: Guincho. For families with young children: Figueirinha, Califórnia, Praia das Maçãs. For untouched nature: Ribeira do Cavalo, Ursa, Adraga. For luxury and scenery: Comporta, Pego.

Local tips

  • In July-August, arriving at Arrábida beaches before 9am is essential — afterwards they fill up.
  • The north coast (Adraga, Guincho) has strong winds — bring a windbreaker even in summer.
  • For Comporta and Tróia, consider staying 1 night — same-day round trip wastes the sunset.
  • Arrábida beaches have almost no bars — bring water and food.
  • Check bathing flags and currents — some beaches have dangerous currents.
