Galapinhos Beach

Europe's Best Beach

Galapinhos Beach

Turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation — elected Europe's best beach by European Best Destinations.

The Galapinhos Beach, within the Arrábida Natural Park, was distinguished in 2017 by European Best Destinations as Europe's best beach. The crystalline turquoise waters, limestone cliffs and dense Mediterranean vegetation create a setting that evokes the eastern Mediterranean — yet just 30 minutes from Setúbal, within a protected natural reserve.

Access and Parking

Access to Galapinhos is regulated between June and September. During these months, parking on National Road 379-1 is prohibited and the only way to arrive is on foot (approximately 15-20 minutes from the Portinho da Arrábida park) or via the electric mini-bus linking Setúbal to Galapinhos. Outside peak season (October to May), you may park in small bays along the road and descend via the trails.

What to Expect

Fine white sand beach, sheltered by a crescent-shaped cove. The waters are shallow near the shore, ideal for snorkeling — you frequently see schools of small fish, sea urchins and sometimes octopuses on the rocky bottom. There are no facilities: bring water, food, sun hat and proper footwear for the stony trails.

Near Quinta da Arrábida

From Quinta da Arrábida, Galapinhos is about 12 minutes by car to the Portinho park, and another 15-20 minutes on foot. It is the most sought-after beach by guests — combine a morning in Galapinhos with lunch at one of the Portinho restaurants.

Local tips

  • Arrive before 9am in June-September: the trail fills and the beach reaches maximum capacity quickly.
  • Low tides reveal small natural pools among the rocks — perfect for children.
  • The beach faces south: you have sunlight all day, bring high-factor sunscreen.
  • Snorkel and mask are almost essential — visibility is excellent.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Galapinhos the same beach as Galapos?

No — they are two contiguous beaches, separated by a small rocky outcrop. Galapos is larger and slightly more accessible, Galapinhos is the smaller (and more beautiful) of the two.

Can I arrive by car?

Yes, outside peak season (October to May). In July-September car access is restricted and you must arrive on foot or by mini-bus.

Are there lifeguards?

Yes, during summer (approximately 15 June to 15 September). Outside that period, swim with caution — there is no supervision.

Are there restaurants on the beach?

No. The nearest restaurants are at Portinho da Arrábida (15-20 minutes on foot). We recommend bringing a picnic.
