Wines and Vineyards of Arrábida

Moscatel de Setúbal, José Maria da Fonseca, Bacalhôa — a route with over 190 years of history 10 minutes from Quinta da Arrábida.

The Setúbal Peninsula is one of Portugal's oldest wine regions — the Moscatel de Setúbal, a sweet dessert wine famous throughout the world, has been produced here since the eighteenth century. Today, several of Portugal's greatest and most distinguished wine houses are based in the area, with historic cellars open for tours and tastings.

José Maria da Fonseca (since 1834)

One of Portugal's oldest table wine producers. The historic cellars in Azeitão hold barrels of Moscatel over 100 years old. Visits include the Family Museum, a walk through traditional cellars and tastings of Periquita (launched in 1850, still in production) and the famous aged Moscatels. 10 minutes from Quinta da Arrábida.

Quinta da Bacalhôa

An absolutely singular property: vineyard, fifteenth-century Renaissance palace, and one of the country's largest private collections of contemporary art (including a giant Buddha and the Sculpture Garden). Tastings combine award-winning wines — Quinta da Bacalhôa Cabernet/Merlot, Catarina, Moscatel — with modernist artworks. An unmissable location.

Casa Ermelinda Freitas

Family vineyards in Fernando Pó. The house's 2005 Syrah was elected the world's best red wine at the Vinalies Internationales 2008 in Paris. Over 1,500 international awards. Visits are intimate and the quality-to-price ratio is among the best in the region.

Venâncio da Costa Lima

Family winery in Quinta do Anjo, founded in 1914. Five-time winner of 1st place in Muscats du Monde. Moscatel Roxo is the house speciality — a rare wine, produced from an indigenous grape variety that nearly disappeared in the 1970s and is today the hidden treasure of the region.

Casa do Arrabidine (liqueur)

Not wine, but worth the visit: Casa do Arrabidine has produced since 1950 the liqueur Arrabidine, known as the «Secret of the Monks of Arrábida». Wild fruits hand-picked in the mountains, distilled in small quantities. Guided tours at Quinta do Anjo.

Local tips

  • Book visits 1-2 days in advance — most cellars receive visitors only at specific times.
  • Reserve a morning for José Maria da Fonseca and an afternoon for Bacalhôa — they are about 5 minutes apart.
  • Combine your visit with lunch in Azeitão (PDO cheeses, Mafra bread, traditional sweets).
  • If you have a car, take the scenic Arrábida road (N379-1) between the two cellars — unforgettable views.

Perguntas frequentes

What is Moscatel de Setúbal?

It is a fortified sweet wine, made from Moscatel de Setúbal and Moscatel Roxo grapes. Fortification (addition of wine brandy) allows it to retain the grape's natural sugar and gain complexity as it ages in oak barrels for years or decades.

Can I taste without reserving?

At some cellars yes, especially outside peak season. But to visit historic cellars (caves, museums) a reservation is always necessary — the price is typically €10-25 per person, with 4-6 wines.

Do I need a car?

It is advisable — the cellars are dispersed. Alternatively, Quinta da Arrábida can help you book a private driver for a half-day circuit.

What are the best wines to take home?

Aged Moscatel (10, 20 or 30 years) is the region's ambassador and travels well. For reds, Periquita Reserva (JMF) or Quinta da Bacalhôa Cabernet are safe choices. Casa Ermelinda Freitas Reserva offers excellent value for money.
